My name is Priya Kumar and I am a bioengineering student with a focus on computer science and a minor in business at the Grainger College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I am an Engineering Ambassador, James Scholar, a member of the Biomedical Engineering Society, and a member of the Health Maker Lab 2021 co-hort at UIUC. I am the Recruitment Manager on a research study on chronic kidney disease and Vice President and Co-founder of a chronic kidney disease prescreening startup called ProteCKD. I am also a volunteer at the Carle Foundation Hospital, on the National 4-H Young Alumni Advisory Committee, and a Young Alumni Leader for the Washington State 4-H Teen Equity and Inclusion Task Force. I am also currently starting a research study about the impact of hands-on STEM education among disadvantaged 7th graders in India.
I hold an Associates Degree in Science from Skagit Valley College. I completed two Microsoft Software Developer Internships and a Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center Public Health Internship. On a team, I engineered five remotely operated vehicles (underwater robots) over the span of seven years, and competed in four international competitions against university teams from over 18 countries. I have also taught and mentored peers and younger students in robotics and programming in the US and India.

Peers and mentors often tell me to just continue being myself because "you have a vibrant and strong personality that shows up in the kind of positions you hold and the work you have done." I believe every success and failure is an opportunity to better myself and learn from others. I enjoy receiving and applying constructive criticism and value myself as a diligent leader, team player, and problem solver. I am constantly in search of new and challenging opportunities as I work toward my goal of combining medicine, engineering, and entrepreneurship. After graduation, I plan to attend medical or graduate school to continue working toward this goal.

On a more personal note, I grew up in Washington State, not far from Seattle and British Columbia, Canada. I was raised in a culturally mixed, multigenerational, business-minded household with my parents, brothers, and grandparents where we spoke Hindi, Japanese, English, and Punjabi. I am a proud Indian-Japanese-American who values family. As a result, I also have many cultural interests and am heavily involved in three cultural organizations. Other than that, my interests include artistic roller skating, traveling, and reading.
